In Nigeria's competitive retail industry, few indigenous brands have built a reputation for longevity, trust and consistent growth like Roban Stores. What started as a modest gift shop over four decades ago has grown into one of southeastern Nigeria's best-known supermarket chains and a diversified business group with interests in hospitality.
At the centre of this remarkable journey is Sir Robert O. Anwatu, an accountant-turned-entrepreneur whose disciplined approach to business transformed a small retail venture into a household name.
Unlike many entrepreneurs who started in commerce, Anwatu's professional foundation was in finance. He worked at Union Bank (then Barclays Bank) between 1976 and 1977 before moving to the United States, where he joined Charles Cole & Co., a certified public accounting firm in Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1982 to 1983. His academic credentials are equally impressive, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in Accountancy from the University of Arkansas.
Armed with financial expertise and an entrepreneurial mindset, Anwatu returned to Nigeria determined to build something of his own.
After completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benin, he launched Robnat Gift in 1985, a small gift shop that served as the foundation of what would later become a retail empire. Just two years later, the business was incorporated as Ultimate Gift Ltd., signalling ambitions far beyond a neighbourhood store.
Growth came steadily. By 1989, the company had expanded with a second outlet in Warri before relocating its operations to Enugu in 1990—a strategic decision that would shape the company's future. Enugu, with its growing urban population and commercial importance in southeastern Nigeria, provided fertile ground for expansion.
A defining moment came in 1999 when Ultimate Gift was rebranded as Roban Stores, reflecting a broader vision beyond gift retailing. In the same year, Anwatu established the Roban Group, creating a diversified enterprise that now encompasses both retail and hospitality through Roban Stores and Roban Hotels.
Today, Roban Stores has become synonymous with modern supermarket shopping in southeastern Nigeria. Its outlets stock a wide range of products including groceries, fresh foods, beverages, household items, electronics, fashion accessories, cosmetics and imported consumer goods. By providing customers with a convenient one-stop shopping experience, the company has helped redefine organised retail in the region.
One of Roban Stores' distinguishing strengths has been its emphasis on customer service, quality assurance and strategic store locations. Rather than pursuing rapid expansion at the expense of operational efficiency, the company has adopted a measured growth strategy that prioritises consistency, customer satisfaction and long-term sustainability.
The company's success also reflects broader changes in Nigeria's retail landscape. As consumer demand shifted from traditional open markets toward organised supermarkets offering convenience, better product variety and improved shopping experiences, Roban positioned itself as a trusted indigenous alternative capable of competing with both local and international retail brands.
Beyond its commercial success, Roban Stores has made a significant contribution to the economy of southeastern Nigeria. The company has created employment opportunities for hundreds of Nigerians across retail, logistics, administration, hospitality and management. It also supports numerous local suppliers, distributors and small businesses through its extensive supply chain, contributing to regional economic development.
Roban's investment in modern retail infrastructure has also encouraged improvements in warehousing, inventory management and customer service standards, helping raise the benchmark for indigenous supermarket operations in Nigeria.
Anwatu's influence extends well beyond business. A Knight of the Good Shepherd, he has played active roles in public service and civic development. He served on the advisory committee of the Enugu State Local Economic Empowerment Programme (LEEMP), was President of the Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), and also served as President of the Rotary Club of New Haven. These leadership positions reflect his commitment to community development, private sector advocacy and economic empowerment.
His career demonstrates how sound financial knowledge, disciplined management and long-term planning can build enduring businesses. Rather than relying on short-term gains, Anwatu focused on gradual expansion, strong corporate governance and reinvestment—principles that have enabled Roban Stores to remain relevant despite economic downturns, inflationary pressures and increasing competition in Nigeria's retail sector.
Today, Roban Stores stands as one of Enugu's most recognisable corporate brands and an example of indigenous enterprise succeeding through vision, resilience and strategic execution. From a single gift shop established in 1985 to a diversified retail and hospitality group, the Roban story is a reminder that sustainable business success is often built one careful step at a time.
As Nigeria's organised retail sector continues to expand, Roban Stores remains well positioned to capitalise on rising consumer demand while serving as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs seeking to build lasting enterprises from humble beginnings.
