Nigeria’s AI Race: Reskilling Millions Could Determine Who Wins and Who Loses

Nigeria is entering a decisive period in its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), with automation expected to significantly reshape the labour market over the coming decade. While AI could put millions of routine jobs at risk, it could also generate millions of new opportunities if Nigeria invests early in technology, digital infrastructure and workforce development.

There are about million routine jobs being exposed to automation by the end of the decade, alongside an estimated 11 million new AI-related or AI-enabled jobs. The difference highlights an important issue: AI is not necessarily a net job destroyer, but Nigeria's ability to benefit from it will depend on whether workers can transition into emerging roles.

Why Nigeria is at an AI crossroads

Nigeria has one of Africa's largest and youngest populations and a rapidly expanding technology ecosystem. AI is already being applied in areas such as banking, telecommunications, agriculture, healthcare, education, customer service and business operations.

However, much of the country's workforce remains concentrated in informal employment and occupations involving repetitive or routine tasks. These are among the areas most likely to experience automation.

Jobs involving data entry, basic administrative work, repetitive customer support, routine accounting, document processing and some clerical functions could increasingly be performed by AI-powered systems.

For Nigerian businesses, automation could improve productivity and reduce operating costs. For workers, however, it could create significant disruption if new skills are not acquired quickly enough.

The 9 million jobs at risk

The projection should not necessarily be interpreted as saying that 9 million Nigerians will simply lose their jobs.

AI typically changes tasks within jobs before it eliminates entire occupations. A bank employee, for example, may continue to have a job while AI handles routine data processing, fraud detection or customer enquiries.

The greatest risk is therefore concentrated among workers whose jobs contain a high proportion of repetitive, predictable tasks.

This makes reskilling and redeployment particularly important. Workers who can use AI tools alongside their existing expertise may become more productive rather than redundant.

Where the 11 million new jobs could come from

The expected creation of approximately 11 million AI-driven jobs could occur across several areas.

Technology and AI development

Nigeria will need software developers, AI engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, cloud professionals and machine-learning experts to build and maintain AI systems.

AI is also likely to create demand for workers who combine technology with expertise in fields such as finance, law, healthcare, marketing, engineering and logistics.

Data-related work

AI systems require large amounts of quality data. Opportunities could emerge in data management, data labelling, quality assurance, model testing and AI governance.

Digital infrastructure

Expanding AI use will require data centres, cloud computing, telecommunications networks and reliable electricity. This could create jobs beyond the technology sector itself.

New businesses and entrepreneurship

Lower technology costs could allow Nigerian entrepreneurs to build AI-powered businesses targeting local and international markets—from agricultural technology to financial services and healthcare.

The infrastructure challenge

One of Nigeria's biggest obstacles is not simply access to AI software but the infrastructure needed to operate it at scale.

Reliable electricity, broadband connectivity, cloud infrastructure and affordable computing capacity will be critical.

Nigeria's digital economy has expanded rapidly, but significant gaps remain between major urban centres and rural communities. If these gaps persist, AI could widen existing economic inequalities by concentrating opportunities among highly educated workers and businesses with access to technology.

Education and reskilling will be crucial

The transition will require changes in Nigeria's education and training systems.

Universities, technical institutions and vocational training programmes will need to place greater emphasis on:

Nigeria's demographic opportunity

Nigeria's large youth population could become an advantage.

If young Nigerians acquire globally competitive digital skills, the country could expand its technology exports and participate more strongly in the global digital economy. Remote work and digital services could allow Nigerian professionals to serve international companies without leaving the country.

But without sufficient investment in education and infrastructure, the same demographic advantage could become a major challenge, particularly if automation affects low-skilled and entry-level employment faster than new opportunities are created.

Government and private-sector response

Nigeria's response will likely require cooperation between the Federal Government, technology companies, universities, financial institutions and employers.

The government's AI agenda needs to move beyond policy documents toward practical investment in infrastructure, research, education and access to computing resources.

Businesses, meanwhile, will need to consider whether AI investment should focus solely on reducing headcount or on augmenting workers and creating higher-value employment.

The bigger economic question

The central question for Nigeria is not simply whether AI will destroy jobs.

It is whether the country can replace routine employment with higher-productivity work quickly enough.

If the estimated 9 million jobs exposed to automation are accompanied by successful reskilling and the creation of the projected 11 million new opportunities, AI could become a major driver of productivity, entrepreneurship and economic growth.

If investment fails to keep pace, Nigeria could face a more difficult transition, with automation displacing workers faster than the economy can create new employment.
