ABUJA — The Federal Government has disclosed that the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), led by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, donated $265,854 to support the evacuation of 500 distressed Nigerians from South Africa following renewed reports of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.
According to the ministry, the financial assistance from the RCCG is intended to support the Federal Government’s efforts to facilitate the safe return of Nigerians affected by the deteriorating security situation.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. Nigerians living and doing business in the country have previously been affected by xenophobic violence, prompting calls for stronger protection of their rights and safety.
The planned evacuation is expected to provide immediate relief to Nigerians who have been left vulnerable by the attacks, while also underscoring the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens abroad.
The Federal Government’s acknowledgement of the RCCG’s contribution also highlights the role of faith-based and private organisations in supporting emergency diplomatic and humanitarian interventions involving Nigerians overseas.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to work with relevant Nigerian diplomatic authorities and other stakeholders to coordinate the evacuation process and ensure that the affected citizens are safely brought back to Nigeria.
The latest development further comes at a time when the Nigerian government continues to engage South African authorities on the safety and welfare of Nigerians resident in the country, particularly in areas where tensions involving foreign nationals have resurfaced.
The government has continued to urge Nigerians abroad to remain vigilant and to report threats to the appropriate Nigerian diplomatic missions, while diplomatic channels are used to address concerns with the South African authorities.
