Iranian officials have cautioned the United States that approaching the Strait of Hormuz might have catastrophic consequences for countries it refers to as "enemy nations."
This comes after the US Central Command declared that it would take control of maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz by blocking all Iranian Gulf ports on Monday at 10 a.m. ET (5:30 p.m. in Iran and 1400 GMT).
Following the failure of peace talks, President Donald Trump had threatened to place a total blockade on the strait.
“The blockade will be enforced without bias against vessels from all nations entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal regions, which includes all Iranian ports located in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman,” the US Central Command said on X.
The US Navy went on to say that it will "not obstruct freedom of navigation for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports."
According to the Guardian UK, Trump has promised to completely blockade the strait, and preliminary indications indicate that ships have stopped passing through the canal.
According to Agence France-Presse, Iran's Revolutionary Guards have declared that Iranian security forces retain total control over the Strait of Hormuz and have warned that enemies will be caught in a "deadly vortex" if they make any "wrong move."
Shahram Irani, the head of Iran's navy, called Trump's warning "ridiculous and funny," according to state television, and added that the country’s military is “monitoring and supervising all movements” of the US military in the area.
