After defeating Ikorodu City F.C. 2-1 to win a record-equalling eighth Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, Rangers International F.C. cemented their place in Nigerian football history.
The Flying Antelopes secured the championship ahead of their nearest rivals, Rivers United F.C., thanks to a key victory from captain Chidiebere Nwobodo, who scored once in each half.
After Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh mishandled a long-range shot, the home team rallied through replacement Moses Ali in the 58th minute.
Rivers United, who concluded their season with a 3-0 victory over Katsina United F.C., trailed Rangers by just one point at the top of the league with 68 points from 38 games.
With the victory, Rangers tie regional rivals Enyimba F.C.'s record for the most NPFL championships ever, and coach Fidelis Ilechukwu won his second league title with the Enugu-based team.
After winning the title, Rangers and runners-up Rivers United will play for Nigeria in the CAF Champions League the following season.
