Following an Iranian strike, a UAE-owned tanker leaks petroleum off the coast of Oman.

Following an Iranian strike, a UAE-owned tanker leaks petroleum off the coast of Oman.

The state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company said on Wednesday that one of its tankers was targeted by Iranian drones last week, leaking a minor amount of petroleum off the coast of Oman.

This highlights the ecological concerns associated with the Iran war. Tehran's effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz has made transiting the critical shipping route dangerous. Hundreds of vessels remain stuck in the Gulf.

ADNOC Logistics & Services is monitoring the situation with its vessel, the M.V. Barakah, and is working closely with authorities and reaction teams. "The ADNOC Logistics & Services vessel Barakah remains at anchor off the coast of Oman after being impacted by two Iranian drones on May 4," a spokeswoman for the business stated.

“A small amount of what is understood to be bunker fuel was unfortunately released as a result of the incident.”

The representative did not specify how much fuel was believed to have escaped. ADNOC L&S said that no crew members were hurt during the attack, and the tanker was not carrying any cargo.

The Maritime Security Center of Oman did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Aerial pictures from Copernicus' Sentinel satellites on May 7 and 9 revealed a white streak trailing from the M.V. Barakah, detected by TankerTrackers.com near Oman's Musandam Peninsula.

"The white trail... is definitely consistent with oil and is clearly coming out of the tanker," said Louis Goddard, co-founder of Data Desk, which focuses on climate and commodities.

Elizabeth C. Atwood, Earth observation senior scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, told Reuters that the slick was no longer apparent in recent imagery.

Separately, satellite photos this week revealed a probable oil spill across dozens of square kilometers of sea near Iran's key oil center, Kharg Island. On Tuesday, Iran's top environmental official stated that the incident was most likely caused by a vessel discharging waste water rather than an oil leak.

A Chinese supertanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi petroleum exited the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after being stranded in the Gulf for more than two months due to the US-Iran war. Data reveals the ship stopped near the Gulf of Oman.

A Chinese supertanker carrying two million barrels of Iraqi petroleum passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday after being stranded in the Gulf for over two months due to the US-Iran war, according to LSEG and Kpler ship-tracking data. According to LSEG data, the Very Large Crude Carrier Yuan Hua Hu is now anchored in the Gulf of Oman, close where the US Navy has built up a blockade on Iranian vessels.

The crossing coincides with the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi's recent visit to Beijing.

According to insiders, Iran has tightened its control over the strait by striking arrangements with Iraq and Pakistan to ship oil and liquefied natural gas.

According to reports, other countries are considering similar accords, potentially strengthening Tehran's dominance over the waterway.

The Chinese VLCC is owned and operated by COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation's Hainan business and chartered by Unipec, the trading arm of Chinese national oil giant Sinopec.

According to satellite research by data analytics specialists SynMax and separate data on the MarineTraffic platform, a truck carrier, Xiang Jiang Kou, traveled through the strait in the last 12 hours and broadcast a message on its AIS public transponder indicating "Chinese vessel and crew." The yacht was operated by the Singapore-registered group Xin Yin Chuang Yuan 6 Tiajin.
