‘Michael’ reclaims the top box-office spot, tops $700 million globally

According to early figures released by the Hollywood trade publications, the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" has returned to the top of the domestic box office rankings four weeks after its premiere. The smash hit has surpassed a global gross of $700 million and is getting close to the record for the highest total gross from a music biopic set by "Bohemian Rhapsody" in 2018.

After dominating the box office for two weeks in a row, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" was surpassed by "Michael," which made an additional $26.1 million at North American theaters over the weekend.

After making over $97.2 million in April, the Michael Jackson movie already shattered records for the largest opening for a music biopic.

As of right now, "Michael" has made over $280 million in North American theaters and $703 million globally.

The Freddie Mercury-inspired movie "Bohemian Rhapsody," which made $911 million globally in 2018, holds the record for best box office performance by any music biopic. It remains to be seen if "Michael" can continue to draw audiences to theaters.

“Michael” has yet to open in at least one major market—Japan, where the movie is scheduled to debut in June.
